Accelerated Reader (AR)
Ridglea Hills Accelerated Reader Program
“ Reading Makes Me Bright”
What is Accelerated Reader (AR)?
AR is a program developed by Renaissance Learning, for K-5th grade. It is designed to motivate students to read more books and to measure their comprehension and progress.
Here’s how it works:
1. Reading Books: Students choose books based on their reading level. The RH school library has a colored dot system - on the spine of each book these colors will indicate a specific reading level. You may also choose books from your public library or even your home library. You can search books at www.arbookfinder.com to see if a specific book has an assigned quiz number.
2. Taking Quizzes: After reading a book, students take an AR quiz on any device. You will log into the student portal through Fwisd.org. Once logged in you will click the Renaissance app and then click the Accelerated Reader (orange). This should take you to a search window, type in the title of the books, author or the quiz number. When you have found the correct book (note that some book covers may look different), you will then click “Take Quiz” on the Reading Practice. Quizzes are multiple choice that assess the student’s understanding of the book.
3. Earning Points: Students will earn points based on the number of correct answers. The number of points a book is worth depends on its length and difficulty of the book.
4. Tracking Progress: AR progress is tracked weekly. A report is pulled at the end of day on Fridays to determine if students have acquired enough points to reach their level (point levels are different and set by grade level, see attachment). If so, the student will be called over the announcements the following Tuesday. They will come to the library and receive their AR button and/or ribbon. We also recognize
students and track levels on the bulletin boards outside the library by grade and teacher. Once students reach their 4th level they will receive the current year’s AR t-shirt that may be worn on spirit day Friday and they will be invited to the end of year popsicle party!
5. Encouragement and Rewards: At the end of the year we pull a report for all points earned throughout the entire school year. Students are invited to come shop at the AR store, where they may “buy” small items with their points earned from reading books. We also have a special pizza party for any student that reads more than One Million Words in a school year and their picture will be added to our Million Word Club (MWC) outside the library.
We are excited for all the reading progress we will see this year using AR. If you have any questions or need any additional information, please feel free to contact our school librarian, Mr. Landy, at craig.landy@fwisd.org or myself.
Happy Reading!!!
